Attachments like Rapid Fire and Millimeter Scanner can make even the least effective weapons formidable and dangerous. A weaker weapon at higher levels can potentially be more effective than a more powerful weapon at lower levels. The unlock system also rewards you for sticking with one weapon since they rank up in levels. Weapon unlocks begin at rather low levels so you are not stuck with lesser effective weapons for a long time, but at the same time Treyarch has done a rather good job of offering enough attachments and also spread out enough that in latter levels you are still unlocking items, which keeps things interesting and new.
